2007 Woman of the Year: Judy Smith

Judy Smith
Employment: Executive Director Children’s Advocacy Center
Nominator: Carol Wilson, Richard Gebhardt

Judy embodies a loving, giving spirit, even when adapting to new situations and challenges, both in her personal and professional life. She became a foster and then adoptive single mother 30 years ago, offering a stable, healthy home to a young girl who, in turn, became her daughter.

Soon after Hamot Medical Center closed its Behavioral Health Unit in 2001, Judy turned her attention to the issue of child abuse. In 2002, she became the executive director of the newly created Children’s Advocacy Center. Under her leadership and vision, the Center has become an invaluable community resource for those in need. She works tirelessly to continually improve the Center, and has guided the relocation process as services expanded and they required more room.

Judy has mastered the art of continual fund-raising and she is an effective and successful grant writer, obtaining grants from every level of government, as well as the private sector. While some nonprofit agencies bemoan a shrinking funding pie, Judy quietly devises a way to not only keep the center operating, but thriving.

Judy is not content to confine her work to the Center and provides workshops and specialized training for facilities like Perseus House. Because of her reputation and expertise, she is a much sought-after lecturer throughout Erie County and elsewhere.

Judy has accomplished so much with so little using her creativity, vision and hard work to make life better for thousands of abuse victims in Erie County.

Nominator: Almitra Clerkin, Erie Playhouse, Erie

A woman who shares her time, talent and resources, Judge Baxter continually gives to her community and especially the young people who will be the future leaders and residents of our community. She knows the importance of each child realizing their full potential and value. She inspires confidence and commitment, giving each child the strength to meet their future head on.

Judge Baxter has helped many beyond the parameters of her profession. She believes education and the arts are two vital necessities for every person. Her commitment to making them available is evident through her tireless volunteer efforts.

Misty O'connor

Employment: Owner/Founder, Point Click Learn, Inc., McKean
Nominator: Steven Overholt, Gannon University SBDC, Erie

A founder/co-founder of three businesses that employ 15 full-time and two parttime personnel, Misty’s inspiration for starting her first business, Point Click Learn, Inc., in 1999 came from her passion for teaching and technology. The business sells educational software to schools in Pennsylvania and Ohio, then trains educators how to integrate the software into their curricula. She empowers thousands of educators every year with tools to engage and motivate students to become successful in a global “21st Century” economy. She saw an opportunity to expand this business by opening a state-of-the-art computer facility which quickly culminated into running technology camps for kids.

Misty has assisted many women with their businesses, passing on her wealth of wisdom and experience, including navigating the processes of founding a non-profit organization; market research, strategies and marketing of a wildlife furniture products business, which included developing and registering the company’s website. Misty has a vision for women in business. She combines a bubbly personality with a positive outlook, dedication to worthy causes, and business acumen that allows her to be a positive force in the community in many ways.

Sonya M. Pyle

Employment: St. Vincent Health Systems, Marketing Department, Erie
Nominator: Tara Quinn, Erie GE Federal Credit Union, Erie

Sonya makes a difference in every woman’s life whether they be five years old or 50. She gives of her time to many organizations including the Villa Brownie Girl Scout Troop, Villa Elementary Swim Team, Fairview Swim Team, Fairview Water Polo, Gannon Water Polo and other youth sporting programs or young women. She went through Leadership training to guide the brownie girls in becoming role models in the comunity. Stressing responsibility, teamwork and willpower, she assisted these young women in starting off onto a path to becoming successful women.

Sonya was instrumental in starting a new Women’s Water Polo team for the girls at Fairview High School. She initiated fund raising efforts for the girls to get proper equipment, travel and pool time to practice. Without her ambition and determination, this opportunity would not be available for these young women.

Many have benefitted from Sonya's inventiveness to increase opportunities for young women across the community. She recently decided that she was going to swim across Lake Erie, training for one year to prepare herself. She not only accomplished this astounding feat, but broke the previous woman’s record by an hour.

Sonya is the inspiration and motivation for many young women.

Nominators: Meg Loncharic, Ruth Burton (1998 WRT Woman of the Year), Margery Kibler (2002 WRT Woman of the Year), Gloria Knox, Carla Leemhuis, Craige Pepper Victor

A prime example of a wife, mother, educator, community leader and volunteer with credible public service credentials of the highest degree, Denise garners the respect from many high-profile Erie area women because of her diversity of talents and dedication to public service. As former Governor Ridge’s Deputy Secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Aging, she assisted in managing a more than $500,000,000 network of services for the state’s 2.5 million senior citizens, the majority of which were women and their families.

She served as president of the Junior League of Erie, an organization committed to training philanthropic leaders in the Erie community on improving the community through the effective action of those volunteers.

Prior to her duties with the Department of Aging, she served two terms on Erie City Council. She was the first woman Republican to serve on Council. She has the rare gift of making others feel that they are important and that nothing could be more pleasant than making their acquaintance.
